Conservation of the Papal Throne from the Church of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem

In 1871 Salvatore Di Martino produced this magnificent throne replete with gold-plated wooden ornaments, that had been commissioned by the Franciscan Order in Italy. It is not known how the throne subsequently arrived to the Franciscan Order of the Church of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem.

In May 2009 the Golden Papal Throne was transferred to the Church of All Nations near the Garden of Gethsemane, just prior to the special Mass led by Pope Benedict XVI during his historical visit to Israel – the Holyland.

During the conservation process, the upholstery of the throne and its velvet cover were renewed. Parts of the structure were restored and the gilded details were redone with 24 carat gold leaf. The conservation project was in collaboration with Michal Blankett.
